As the Georgia quarterback competition forges forward, there has been a string of rumors that Brock Vandagriff could enter the transfer portal. Now, former Bulldogs quarterback Aaron Murray joined The Hard Count with J.D. PicKell where he spoke about that possibility.

As Murray explained, Vandagriff is trying to balance emotions as he makes this decision, both wanting to be at Georgia but also to get the chance to start.

“Brock loves being at Georgia,” Aaron Murray explained. “He loves being at UGA. I mean, he’s a kid from Athens, went to Prince Academy, so I think it’s always been a dream for him to be on this roster, but you want to play too.”

“Like, there’s that good feeling of I’m wearing the red and black. I’ve dreamed since I was a little kid to wear this uniform,” Murray continued. “But there’s also that competitor inside that you want to play football. You only get a small window and a small opportunity to do it.”

To this point, head coach Kirby Smart has tried to emphasize that the competition is wide open and the evaluation is ongoing. However, as Aaron Murray explained, someone like Brock Vandagriff is probably aware of just how true that is.

“So, I don’t know what Kirby’s is telling them behind closed doors when it comes to hey this competition’s still on, it’s still not. I think you kind of have to know, as a player you kind of have to check yourself and surround yourself with good people and kind of step back and say, ‘Okay, Carson [Beck] got the first team reps. He balled out, we looked great. Yeah, I played well too, but realistically am I going to be the starter? Probably not.'”

Aaron Murray emphasized that he thinks Georgia could be successful with Beck or Vandagriff. However, if it looks like it will be Beck then Vandagriff needs to evaluate his situation. Is it smart to sit and wait? What if he waits and gets beat out by Gunner Stockton?

“He wants to play, he’s good enough to play, he’s good enough to play at 75% of the schools out there that need a quarterback. He can jump in the portal tomorrow, show up with his work ethic, and he’s a tremendous worker, compete to be a starting quarterback come fall.”

Brock Vandagriff could start at a lot of schools that are still playing at the top level of the sport. So, he has options if he does decide to hit the portal.

“So, it’s up to him, man, I hope he stays but in today’s world you’re going to lose great ones. They’ve got plenty of great guys on that roster and the thing with Kirby too, because of the way he’s built this program, you lose one or two at certain positions, he can go and pluck someone in the portal this year and as soon as the season is over he can also go pluck the top guy at the quarterback spot if he needs another quarterback come next offseason.”

Brock Vandagriff on the possibility of transferring

Brock Vandagriff tried to make it seem like he hadn’t given much thought to the chance of transferring when he was asked about the possibility following spring ball.

“To be completely honest, I hadn’t thought about it much,” Brock Vandagriff said. “Just 15 practices. I had to get better every practice and that’s just where I’m at with that.”
