Although being a national champion quarterback, Stetson Bennett still has a significant lack of flowers coming his way. The Georgia defense was the strength of the Bulldog’s first championship team since 1980. However, they couldn’t have gotten the job done without Bennett. Everything he has proven and still is as a player has Aaron Murray telling fans to have more faith in the former walk-on.

The former Georgia QB defended Bennett in an appearance on ‘Always College Football’ with Greg McElroy. Murray says Bennett still isn’t getting his full due as a QB who led his state’s school to a title.

“He’s getting more (love). I don’t know if he’s getting what he deserves,” said Murray. “All these top guys that the fans get invested in from high school…Stetson wasn’t that as we all know. (Bennett) was a walk-on. No one really cared that Stetson went to Athens and went to the University of Georgia.”

If they didn’t care before, they should care now. Bennett threw for 2,862 yards for 29 touchdowns. Georgia boasted a historic, No. 1 defense, but Bennett helped them produce a Top-10 offense in the country as well.

Aaron Murray wants Georgia fans to show a little more gratitude for what Bennett was and still is for the program. He says they’re too busy counting stars rather than appreciating the uncommon story Bennett is. He came from the bottom and has grown to show all the qualities Murray thinks makes up a great college quarterback.

“Georgia fans believe stars matter more than anything. They believe if you’re a four or five star guy that you are automatically the best person on that roster…Stars don’t mean anything once you get into the locker room, especially at the quarterback position,” Murray said. “There’s just so many things that go into being a quarterback other than just throwing the football. Yes, you have to throw the football in order to be successful, especially in the SEC. But you have to be a great leader, a guy that works for everyone, to have guts, to have poise. Stetson’s someone that has all of that and it’s why he was able to have success last year and a big reason why I think he’s gonna have a lot of success this year.”

Bennett can continue to build on his growing lore with a successful senior season. Aaron Murray realizes the importance of having a top QB in the SEC, specifically having continuity in the spot from the year before. If Bennett can lead Georgia to contention again in 2022, he’d finally earn those flowers he’s long been due.
