Stetson Bennett made a name for himself in 2021 as he went from backup to national champion quarterback at Georgia. Even though he has that title to his name, ESPN analyst and former Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray had a message for Bulldogs fans about Bennett.

During an appearance on “Always College Football” with Greg McElroy, Murray urged the Georgia faithful to have some patience with Bennett if he doesn’t come out firing right away. Last season, Bennett had 2,862 yards and 29 touchdowns to lead Georgia to its first national title in 40 years.

Murray thinks he can put up even more impressive numbers this season. That’s why Bulldogs fans should cut him a break if he starts slow, especially with a tough task in Week 1 against Oregon.

“This is more of a message for Georgia fans for Stetson,” Murray said. “Even if he comes up there and is just good through the first one or two games, just be patient, enjoy yourself. Give the man some slack, for goodness sakes. He is a tremendous leader both on and off the field. I’m super excited about his season.

“It would not surprise me if Stetson’s a guy at the end of the season we look back and has thrown anywhere from 30-35 touchdowns, five interceptions and maybe five rushing touchdowns, as well.”

Kirby Smart updates the current state of Georgia’s second-string quarterback battle

Stetson Bennett is the guy in Athens ahead of the regular season for the first time in his career, meaning the national spotlight has been shone elsewhere regarding quarterback battles. There’s still a need for a reliable second option behind Bennett, and Georgia head coach Kirby Smart is loving what he’s seeing from the rest of the quarterback room this camp.

While there isn’t a clear-cut No. 2, it’s between Brock Vandagriff and Carson Beck to fall in behind Bennett, which true freshman Gunner Stockton will have to take the back seat for now with a redshirt season likely ahead of him.

“I’ve said all camp that all three quarterbacks are doing an excellent job,” Smart said. “I’m so pleased with the progression of those guys all the way down to Gunner [Stockton], who hasn’t had as many reps in our system – or in general as Brock [Vandagriff] and Carson [Beck] has, and we try to have a lot of two spots where I feel like Gunner’s getting reps and getting work.”
