Georgia offensive lineman Amarius Mims is dealing with an ankle injury, keeping him out for a significant amount of time. He left Saturday’s contest against South Carolina in the second quarter, with Smart saying it could be an ankle sprain.

However, tightrope surgery on the ankle was required for Mims. Smart revealed the procedure has already taken place, meaning Mims has started the recovery process. A good sign for Georgia even if he is not going to be on the field for a chunk of the season.

“It’s already taken place,” Smart said during Wednesday’s SEC Coaches Teleconference.

When asked if Mims was doing well, Smart replied “Yep.”

With the injury to Mims occurring over the weekend, Smart initially thought it was an ankle sprain for Mims. During his postgame press conference, he did not exactly know the severity of it. But we know now tightrope surgery was required, potentially keeping him out for 4-6 weeks.

“I don’t know if it’s an ankle sprain,” Smart said on Saturday. “I don’t know how significant. There was no clue. It seems like there’s ankles sprains is all over the country right now, because everybody’s got ankle sprains. We got ankle sprains everywhere. But I don’t know how significant it is. So we’ll find out.”

Mims was expected to be an impacted player for Georgia this season, being named first-team All-SEC coming out of SEC Media Days in Nashville. He had started for the Bulldogs in all three games thus far.

Kirby Smart provides the latest on tight end Pearce Spurlin

Mims is not the only Georgia player experiencing injury problems. However, tight end Pearce Spurlin was the only other update Smart provided on Wednesday. He says the tight end is dealing with an AC sprain but does not believe he is going to miss too much time.

“Little bit of an AC sprain,” Smart said. “And a couple of other things. He should be back here shortly.”

Another standout freshman tight end, Spurlin is in his first season with Georgia. He did not play against South Carolina but was present in the first two nonconference games. Spurlin even caught a pass for four yards against Ball State.

Spurlin played high school football at Santa Rosa Beach (FL) South Walton, where he was a four-star prospect. He was the No. 68 overall recruit in the 2023 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Rankings, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.
