The folks over at Athlon Sports do college football previews as well and extensively as anyone in the game, breaking down each and every FBS team ahead of the season. This year is no different as their college football bible has recently hit shelves. This time around, we got some juicy quotes from anonymous coaches on a number of teams, including reigning back-to-back national champion Georgia.

The Bulldogs are the standard at the moment and you’re not going to hear much disagreement from other college coaches throughout the country. One coach is bullish on the Dawgs completing the three-peat and thinks UGA has to be considered the favorite nationwide after their previous two years of dominance.

“They’re the default pick for the College Football Playoff, the national title game and the conference,” one (likely SEC) coach boldly declared to Athlon, noting that Georgia has the perhaps the best roster again this year. “Absent quarterback, they have the most complete roster in the league and probably the entire country,” he added.

That quarterback spot is a question mark after elder statesman Stetson Bennett finally departed. However, despite the change under center and at offensive coordinator, this coach is confident Georgia will be just fine.

“So if you settle on a QB, and let’s say it’s (Carson) Beck, (Mike) Bobo is going to do exactly the same thing as (Todd) Monken — tell the kid he has to be just efficient enough to move the ball around and stay out of negative plays.”

As for the defense, well, that’s where Kirby Smart has excelled since day one and proved last season the program could withstand the loss of an excellent DC in Dan Lanning and still win it all.

“It doesn’t matter what they lose,” said the coach. “They’re Kirby Smart’s Alabama defense — or Nick Saban’s, I guess? — where they just reload with NFL-caliber guys. They’re just simply the best and most effective defense in the nation.”

There were no lies spoken from this SEC coach and no bitterness either, which is nice to see. Because sometimes, when these coaches are granted anonymity, they’re worse than a sewing circle. Not this time. This coach was all love and respect for what is obviously the top program, top coach and top DAWG in college football.
