Brett Thorson injury update: ESPN gives unfortunate news on Georgia punter
Georgia punter Brett Thorson was injured in the third quarter of the SEC Championship Game following a punt to Texas. He has been ruled out of the game.
The team’s return unit surrendered a big return to Texas speedster Silas Bolden up the sideline. As Bolden broke free down the sideline, Brett Thorson attempted to range over to make a tackle.
But before he could make the play, he seemed to get wobbly on his legs, falling to the turf next to another Georgia player.
He turned over from his stomach and immediately grabbed at his left knee, holding it on the turf. The ABC broadcast showed a replay of the event, letting viewers know that Brett Thorson appeared to be injured.
“Well the Georgia Bulldogs will be without another one of their most important weapons,” the ABC broadcast reported. “This is Thorson, their punter. You can see that left knee injury there for him. He is out for the remainder of the game, and guys, you know how big this injury is. He has been booming punts and he will be out. Big news.”
Brett Thorson has been quite productive as a punter this season. He has booted it 38 times for a total of 1,784 yards — averaging 46.95 yards per attempt. He has dropped 20 kicks inside the 20-yard line, while he has 15 boots of 50 or more yards.
Carson Beck ruled out for the game
Brett Thorson wasn’t the only injury that forced a player to exit the SEC Championship Game for good. Unfortunately for Georgia, quarterback Carson Beck also suffered an injury that knocked him out.

He suffered an apparent arm injury just before halftime, and Gunner Stockton will take over the rest of the way.
“Kirby Smart has told me that Carson Beck will be unable to return to this game,” ABC sideline reporter Holly Rowe said out of halftime. “They are not going to talk about the hand injury right now because they don’t know exactly what it is.”
Beck went to make one final throw before the break, but got hit as he threw. As the Longhorns and Bulldogs scrambled for the ball behind him, Beck stayed on the ground, holding his right arm.
Smart said the staff would evaluate things in the halftime locker room, but expressed optimism his quarterback would be able to give it a go out of the break. However, Beck can’t go back into the game, which means it’s Stockton’s show.
