One of the biggest success stories of the last two years in college football is Brock Bowers. The Georgia star won the Mackey Award this year as the nation’s best tight end and is emerging as one of the top players in the sport.

His transition to the college level wasn’t the easiest though. After all, he didn’t have a senior season to end high school. That made things tough.

“Transitioning from high school was a lot different, and also because I didn’t play high school football my senior year because of COVID in California,” Bowers said SportsTalk 790 this week. “I had no clue what to expect coming in, and I’m in. Just kind of worked hard and got through it.”

It seems like he’s handle the leap from high school to college just fine. In two years with Georgia, Bowers has 1,608 yards, 19 touchdowns and a national championship ring with the Bulldogs. He’s a big reason why they’re heading back to the College Football Playoff with a shot at another national title. That’s not bad for a former four-star recruit who didn’t have a senior season in high school.

At first, Bowers said he felt a little behind the curve when he arrived in Athens. But the staff got to work to get him up to speed, and it’s paying dividends.

“I felt like it at first, but spring ball really helped me,” Bowers said. “We just practiced so much and did so much stuff that I was prepared.”

Bowers and Georgia are now preparing to take on Ohio State in the Peach Bowl on New Year’s Eve. The winner punches its ticket to the national championship at SoFi Stadium Jan. 9.

Brock Bowers says playing for Kirby Smart is ‘always interesting’

Kirby Smart knows how to connect to his players and it shows in the recruiting rankings. Few programs have brought in more talent than Georgia since Smart took over in 2016. One of the best is Brock Bowers, who is fresh off being named the Mackey Award for being the nation’s top tight end.

From a football perspective, we know the Bowers and Smart duo is incredible. Off the field, the two seem to have a good relationship as well. Bowers described playing for Smart as “interesting”, citing the constant energy in the Georgia locker room.

“It’s always interesting,” Bowers said. “He always brings a bunch of energy and always has some new catchphrase to say every day. So, he keeps it interesting for us.”
