As Georgia prepares for the 2023 season and a run at becoming back-to-back-to-back national champions, the team will do so knowing that someone else will be leading the offense next season. With super senior quarterback Stetson Bennett off to the NFL, the Bulldogs will need to find a new starting quarterback. One of the likely candidates to be Georgia’s starting signal caller next season is Brock Vandagriff.

So far, during the spring, Vandagriff has been in battle with Carson Beck for the right to start next season. The redshirt sophomore is doing everything in his power to close the gap between Beck and himself while simultaneously separating himself from the rest of the competition. And during a recent press conference, Vandagriff explained what he’s currently working on and what areas he wants to improve most this offseason to achieve that goal.

“So just with ways I’m trying to like grow and develop my game would just be like defensive recognition,” said Vandagriff. “When you go with the threes or the twos, you can look out there and pretty much have a feel for what they’re going to be in. Like, alright, they’re starting this; it’s probably going to end up in this.

“When you get out there with the ones, you can look up there, you can catch the ball, look back up, and it’s something totally different. Just being able to study and look at different things that help to tip, (and) give that stuff away. And just studying film is the main thing that will help with that, and watching other opponents as well. And just getting better at watching film.”

Vandagriff is a Georgia native hailing from Bogart, GA. The six-foot-three, 205-pound quarterback has spent two seasons with the Bulldogs. In those two years, he is yet to record a start. However, he has seen some playing time, albeit very little. Vandagriff played in two games last season, against Samford in Georgia’s second game, followed by an appearance against South Carolina the following week. And in those two games, he attempted two passes and completed neither. But he was able to rush for seven yards on a single attempt against Samford.

Of the two quarterbacks, Beck appears to hold the upper hand. The now junior quarterback was Bennett’s primary backup last season and did well while on the field. Beck completed 74.3 percent of his passes (26-35) for 310 yards, four touchdowns, and zero interceptions.
