Brock Bowers impressed with Carson Beck's confidence
All-star Georgia tight end Brock Bowers came away very impressed with Carson Beck’s confidence over the course of the summer and leading into the 2023 season.
Beck was named the starter ahead of the Week 1 opener, as he’s slated to take over for two-time national champion Stetson Bennett. Beck, who played in relief last season, has quite the weapon in Bowers to throw to this fall.
Bowers noted Beck took some big strides from last year to this season.
“Yeah, I think a big, big thing for him was the confidence,” Bowers said. “I guess that he developed (it in) fall camp and I feel like he just got faster at making reads … So I think that helps a lot and the confidence thing is a huge deal for him.”
Bulldogs’ head coach Kirby Smart revealed how Beck and the rest of the quarterback room have taken the news of him being named the starter.
“Hasn’t changed much. I mean, I think he understood. He got a pretty good volume of those reps anyway. He’s done well prior to them knowing that. And he’s done well post-knowing,” Smart said.
“To be honest, both Gunner and Brock have, too. They’ve done a tremendous job of growing and continuing to put the offense in positions to be successful and make explosive plays. So they’ve all done a good job of that.”
Ahead of the 2023 campaign, Beck took some time to recall the conversation where he was named the team’s starting quarterback, and how the entire process shook out.

“The conversation was just very simple, it was straightforward,” Beck said. “He told us all what was going to happen, and I don’t think it changed much, at least in my mindset. I think we’ve all performed really well during fall camp.
“But it is good to like know that you’re the guy, but it hasn’t changed my approach towards practice, or my approach towards watching film or anything of that sort, so it’s all (been) the same.”
Over the course of 11 appearances in two years, Beck is 36-of-58 passing (62.1%), six touchdowns and two interceptions.
As a member of the Class of 2020, Beck was a four-star recruit out of Jacksonville (Fla.) Mandarin, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He was the No. 34 overall prospect in the state, the No. 16 quarterback in the class and the No. 224 overall prospect in the class.
