Carson Beck explains how Georgia can offset the loss of Brock Bowers

Programs like Georgia typically reload pretty seamlessly from year to year, but every now and then there’s a prospect that simply can’t be replaced. This year? It’s tight end Brock Bowers.

Bowers was a back-to-back Mackey Award winner as the nation’s top tight end, and every bit of both awards was deserving.

“Of course, I mean obviously there’s only one Brock Bowers,” quarterback Carson Beck said recently at the Manning Passing Academy. “He’s one of, if not the best player I’ve ever played with. Obviously I’ve had the pleasure of playing with some really good guys at the University of Georgia, but there is no Bowers.”

Despite battling through injuries during his junior season in 2023, Bowers still managed to total 56 catches for 714 yards and six touchdowns.

That was his lowest career output in every category.

But when he’s healthy, the production is absurd. He scored 20 touchdowns between his freshman and sophomore seasons and is the kind of mismatch that opposing teams simply have to gameplan against.

So how do the Bulldogs replace Brock Bowers?

“Truly it always is next man up. We have a really good tight end room,” Beck said. “Really good athletes, guys that can make plays after the catch, good in the run-block, make contested catches. So like I said, obviously there’s no Brock Bowers, but I’m very excited for the players we’re bringing back, very excited for the plays that they can make.”

There are two primary options right now at the position for the Bulldogs: returning player Oscar Delp and Stanford transfer Ben Yurosek.

Delp recorded 24 catches for 284 yards and three scores a year ago suiting up for Georgia. The Bulldogs know what they’re getting out of him and are hoping he can turn it up a notch.

Then there’s Yurosek. He’s also coming off a down year thanks to injuries, but he tallied 91 catches for 1,098 yards and four touchdowns during the 2021-22 campaigns.

There are other options on the roster, too. Enough that even though he knows how much he’ll miss Brock Bowers, Carson Beck isn’t concerned about the spot going forward.
