Carson Beck injury update: Georgia QB comes in for game-winning play vs. Texas
Carson Beck was done for the day with a right hand/arm injury, it was announced coming out of halftime. But with Georgia needing a quarterback to step in after backup Gunner Stockton had his helmet knocked off in overtime, Beck strapped it up for one final, walk off play.
With his right arm dangling and seemingly barely functional, Beck sauntered out for a first and goal play that resulted in a game-winning touchdown for Trevor Etienne in the SEC Championship Game. It gave Georgia a 22-16 win over Texas, and propels the Bulldogs to a Top 4 seed and bye in the College Football Playoff.
All coming after a play where Beck wasn’t supposed to be in the game.
Smart offered an update on Beck’s condition after the game.
Beck is set to undergo an MRI to further determine the severity of the injury, Smart said. The coach also revealed that Beck was unable to grip or throw the ball.
“Upper extremity injury,” Smart said. “We don’t know to what extent. Said they looked at it and it looked OK but didn’t have grip strength and couldn’t throw.”
The QB suffered the injury in the in the final seconds of the second quarter and did not start the second half. He briefly returned on the final play of the game in overtime, but only handed the ball off to Trevor Etienne, who scored the game-winning touchdown.

Beck has been the starting quarterback at Georgia for the past two seasons. This year, he has thrown for 3,429 yards and 28 touchdowns to 12 interceptions.
The good news is that the Bulldogs will have a little more than three weeks before they play their first game in the College Football Playoff. That will give Beck some time to recover, but it remains to be seen what his timetable might be.
Redshirt sophomore Gunner Stockton entered the SEC Championship game after Beck went down with injury Saturday. He finished 12-of-16 passing for 71 yards and one interception while leading Georgia back from a halftime deficit for the win.
Stockton would likely be expected to start in Georgia’s quarterfinal game of the CFP if Beck is unable to play.
