Earlier in the week, Carson Beck was named the starting quarterback for the Georgia Bulldogs. While that is one box checked off for him of things to do, it is not the only one he has been fixated on during fall camp.

Recently, Beck revealed what he believes is one of the biggest improvement areas for him and the Bulldogs’ offense as they prepare for the start of the 2023 season, which is less than two weeks away.

“I think I’ve performed well. I think there’s always room for improvement. You know, you can never be perfect, especially as a quarterback,” said Beck. “The biggest thing I’ve tried to improve on is third downs. Just being consistent (and) being efficient. Obviously, our defense throws a lot at us, so we get a lot better as an offense. But that’s definitely one of the biggest things I’ve been working on.”

Beck and the George offense have a monumental task ahead of them as they attempt to capture the college football national championship for the third year in a row. Being effective on third downs will go a long way into helping Georgia achieve that goal.

Last season, the Bulldogs ranked fifth in the nation on third downs, converting 93 of their 182 attempts for a 51 percent success rate. If Beck can get them to perform even better on third downs, it’ll make Georgia’s offense nearly unstoppable on their quest to repeat.

Smart reveals how Beck has handled starting job so far

Recently, Bulldogs’ head coach Kirby Smart also took to the mic to reveal how Beck and the rest of the quarterback room have taken the news of him being named the starter.

“Hasn’t changed much. I mean, I think he understood. He got a pretty good volume of those reps anyway. He’s done well prior to them knowing that. And he’s done well post-knowing,” said Smart.

“To be honest, both Gunner and Brock have, too. They’ve done a tremendous job of growing and continuing to put the offense in positions to be successful and make explosive plays. So they’ve all done a good job of that.”

While Beck has been named the starter, that does not mean we have seen the last of Gunner Stockton and Brock Vandagriff. With as dominant as Georgia is on the field, the two are likely to see playing time this season should games get out of hand. And it wouldn’t be out of the ordinary if Smart decides to implement a few play packages for either quarterback this year.
