Position battles, especially at quarterback, can be tough and rigorous. This can lead to strained relationships between players competing for spots on the depth chart. But not at Georgia, or at least when it comes to their quarterback battle, according to Carson Beck.

The six-foot-four redshirt junior has been in a heated battle all spring with Brock Vandagriff to determine who will be the Bulldogs’ starting quarterback in 2023. And while the competition has been heated, Beck says it is all love between him and the rest of the quarterbacks in the room.

“I mean, honestly, I’d say this is one of if not the closest quarterback room; at least that I’ve had since I’ve been here. We all hang out outside of football. Like, there’s no animosity and it’s all just competitive excellence. Everyone just brings their hat everyday and tries to be the best they can,” said Beck.

The battle to be named Georgia’s next starting quarterback is mainly between Beck and Vandagriff, but true freshman Gunner Stockton has been making some noise in the spring too. However, Georgia has given Beck the upper hand, dating back to last season. The redshirt junior was national championship game MVP Stetson Bennett’s primary backup last season and did well while on the field.

Beck completed 74.3 percent of his passes (26-35) for 310 yards, four touchdowns, and zero interceptions. As it currently stands, the starting quarterback job is Beck’s to lose—a sentiment shared by many, including former Bulldogs QB Aaron Murray.

Murray names Beck as the clear favorite in Georgia quarterback battle

On a recent episode of On3’s The Hard Count, host JD PicKell brought on the former Bulldogs star quarterback to over a wide array of stories going on throughout the college football landscape. But first on the docket was the quarterback situation happening at Murray’s alma mater, Georgia.

When asked who he believes will be the starting quarterback for Georgia to start the 2023 season, there was no doubt in Murray’s mind that Beck would lead the Bulldogs’ offense.

“Carson was the guy three years ago. I mean, he was dubbed the starter when JT (Daniels) went down… But from the first time I saw Carson throw the ball, I was like, this guy’s got it. And you just know, when you’re around certain quarterbacks, there’s just that it factor,” said Murray.

“It’s funny because I talk about these NFL quarterbacks like Anthony Richardson getting ready for the draft; I get crazy. I’m like, watch the film, watch the film. You get caught up in seeing these guys throw the football and the way they look and the way the ball is released. And you kind of just say, man, if he can just kind of put it all together, he could be pretty darn special. I think that’s been the case for Carson. Can he put everything together, from the fundamentals to the mental to the leadership, (and) be a really, really good quarterback? And he’s just continued to grind in all those areas, talking with people in the building.”
