JD PicKell: Start of season could benefit Carson Beck at Georgia

The start of the season could really benefit Georgia quarterback Carson Beck if he’s the guy under center this year, according to On3’s J.D. PicKell.

It’s a transitional year for the Bulldogs while the team still gears up for a championship run. Essentially, Beck might pilot the ship that can potentially win a third straight national title.

If Beck is the guy to do it for Georgia, the first third of the regular season definitely helps.

“Look at the way this shapes up for him should he be the starting quarterback, look at those first four games,” PicKell said on The Hard Count. It’s not going to be this thing where ‘hey Carson Beck, congrats you’re the starter. Get ready, we got a blockbuster Week 1.’ It’s not the scenario. And it’s not really George’s fault. They play UT Martin, they play Ball State, play South Carolina, which will be, definitely, an increased level of difficulty.

“I’m not disrespecting the Gamecocks and then you play UAB. So three out of your first four hypothetically as a starting quarterback are against (Group of Five) teams. I love that for him.”

But don’t think Georgia wants a six-touchdown game from Beck in Week 1 to make sure he’s the guy. The Bulldogs can pretty much ease him into the offense and ramp it up based on who they’re playing.

That’s not to disrespect Georgia’s opponents, but it’s not the meat grinder portion of the season.

“It’s not going to be a thing where game one you got to be going 100 miles an hour,” PicKell said. “That’s not what you do with a new vehicle. You don’t just step on the gas straight out of the garage. You kind of ease into it, figure out how the car runs, you get comfortable and then you slowly but surely start to open it up. That’s the luxury that Carson Beck has as QB1 for the Georgia Bulldogs.

“So that’s very, very good. It’s a very, very good sign for his maturation and his growth and development. All those buzz words you want to use around quarterbacks when they first get the keys to the offense. That’s a really good sign for him and for Georgia. It’s a very good reality to live in.”

Beck seems to have the upper hand on quarterback Brock Vandagriff in the Georgia QB room. But for now, the Bulldogs have the summer to keep developing and get ready for a run at a three-peat.
