Stetson Bennett further cemented himself in the history books Monday with a legendary National Championship game performance for Georgia.

It’s one Chris Smith will never forget.

“The Mailman always delivers,” Smith said. “He proved ever doubter that he had wrong. Day in and day out and all he does put his head down and go to work. That’s what I’ll remember most about him. One of the best teammates I’ve ever had.”

Bennett’s masterclass started right from the jump as he finished with six total touchdowns — four through the air and two on the ground.

He threw for 304 yards on 72% passing while adding 39 rushing yards before being relieved in the second half.

“Number one, in my opinion,” Smith said about where Stetson Bennett stacks up historically. “Number one.”

Kirby Smart thinks Stetson Bennett is number one too

Head coach Kirby Smart also had high praise for Bennett in the aftermath of the victory.

“Stetson speaks for himself, the way he leads and prepares,” Smart said in his post-game press conference. “His mental makeup is such of a quarterback that believes he can make every throw and what he did tonight was truly amazing,” Smart said in his postgame press conference. “Probably had his best game of his career, in my opinion, with some of the checks he made, some of the decisions he made, just really elite.”

The topic of whether Bennett should make the College Football Hall of Fame also came up as he is technically ineligible right now as he never made an All-American game.

Smart said that discussion is for another day.

“Should this guy go in?” Smart said. “It’s a long time away. I think 20 years from now when he comes back we’ll talk about that. But I don’t know those prerequisites. I know he’s got G.O.A.T. status in Athens, Georgia forever.”
