Darnell Washington says Georgia not looking at title game as 'back-to-back'

One of the biggest storylines surrounding the CFP National Championship game is whether or not Georgia can win back-to-back national championships, an incredibly difficult task. However, as Bulldogs tight end Darnell Washington explained, that’s not how Georgia is looking at this game.

Washington explained this mindset to On3.

“Well for the guys that were here last year, we look at this as we put last year’s team behind us,” Darnell Washington said.

“So, we look at it as, you know like, we don’t really look at it as back-to-back. We just look at it as, ‘Let’s go. Let’s go get it.’ Anything is possible. That’s just how we go into it.”

Georgia is a heavy favorite to win the national championship game over TCU. However, this is a slightly different team than the one that beat Alabama last season. In particular, Georgia saw roster turnover on defense last season.

Darnell Washington was a part of last year’s team. He was overshadowed a bit by Brock Bowers, one of the country’s best tight ends, though. That happened again this season. Still, his production went up. In 14 games, Washington has made 27 catches for 426 yards and two touchdowns.

Unfortunately, Darnell Washington has been banged up and is only a game-time decision for the Bulldogs, according to Pete Thamel.

Darnell Washington on what makes Georgia’s tight ends unique

Georgia is known for having the best tight end room, top to bottom, in the country. Darnell Washington explained the room and what makes it so unique.

We all bring different playing styles to the game,” Washington said.

“It’s a mismatch in the blocking or even in the passing game, so I feel like we’re unique you know? We all feel the same and I feel like that’s what’s special. Each team can’t play us the same you know, like most teams got one tight end and or a couple of tight ends. You can like, put the safety on them or use a linebacker. I feel like you can’t do that with us.”
