Controversy struck during the GeorgiaTexas game on Saturday, with the Longhorn fans potentially playing a role. Jahdae Barron had intercepted Carson Beck but was flagged for pass interference to overturn the call. People inside Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium were not happy with the call, threw debris on the field, and gave the officials an opportunity to huddle up.

Eventually, the pass interference was overturned and Texas got the ball deep in the red zone. Georgia head coach Kirby Smart went crazy and he was not the only one. Former Bulldog David Pollack called out the officials on social media, saying it’s something he has never seen in football.

“Wow I have never seen that in my life,” Pollack said. “The fans threw bottles on the field and the refs literally changed their call. That is such horse crap man. That’s one of the worst ways of handling a situation I have seen. Can’t believe they ain’t talking about that in the booth.”

Pollack is a former ESPN employee and based on his last sentence, is not too happy with Chris Fowler or Kirk Herbstreit either. He did not feel like either of them discussed the situation enough and instead focused on the call from the officials.

SEC officials overturn pass interference call on Texas

An officiating controversy unlike many in recent memory struck at a pivotal junction in the Georgia–Texas showdown on Saturday night. Hanging in the balance? A red zone possession for the Longhorns, trailing by two scores at home.

With Georgia in possession late in the third quarter, Carson Beck targeted wideout Arian Smith down the left sideline. Smith had made contact and turned inside while defender Jahdae Barron held his ground. There was contact from both parties, and the bail sailed into Barron’s arms before he returned it inside the 10. But a flag was thrown, called for defensive pass interference.

The call immediately drew the ire of Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian and the approval of Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart. Fans hurled debris on the field.

And then, after a lengthy discussion — in part allowed by the delay cause by fans throwing debris on the field — the roles were reversed as the officials announced there was, actually, no penalty on the play.
