Explaining lower pressure on Carson Beck in 2023
Anything less than another Georgia national championship is a disappointment from Carson Beck. No pressure.
That was sarcasm… Kind of. After back-to-back national titles for the Bulldogs, rings are the standard. However, On3’s own JD PicKell believes Beck might not be under as much pressure as some outsiders would assume.
“There’s a lot of pressure on the brand at Georgia. There’s a lot of pressure to go three in a row at Georgia because quite frankly they have everything available to them to get that done. But, for the pressure that lies on Carson Beck’s shoulders, I actually think it’s a little bit less than we would assume,” PicKell said on the Thursday’s episode of “The Hard Count.”
Beck appeared in seven games last season, completing 26-35 passes for 310 yards and four touchdowns. The 6-foot-4 quarterback was a four-star recruit in high school and the 16th-best quarterback in the nation, according to On3 Industry Rankings.
While the words “four-star recruit” almost seem like an insult to Georgia at this point, it’s important to remember Stetson Bennett. The fourth-round 2023 NFL Draft pick was a three-star recruit coming out of high school. Further, Bennett was the 35th highest-ranked play in Mississippi 2017 class.

So, perhaps Beck might be alright. Perhaps he could be great.
“Carson Beck has so much around him that’s going to allow him to be successful. He’s gonna drop back and he’s gonna look to his first read and his second read is going to be somebody like Brock Bowers or it’ll be Dominic Lovett, or it’ll be any of the proven commodities on the Georgia football team,” PicKell said.
The Bulldogs are returning 52% of their offensive production and 70% of their defensive production from last season. Mix that with an incoming class of four five-star prospects and a whopping 18 four-star recruits, and Beck is looking fantastic.
Despite the season being only a 100 days away, Beck will have time to adjust to the spotlight. After all, the Bulldogs open the 2023 season with four-straight home games where their only power-5 opponent will be South Carolina.
PicKell believes when the time comes, Beck will be ready.
“[Georgia doesn’t] need Carson Beck to really be that dude until they get to the SEC title game and they get to the College Football Playoff,” PicKell said. “Carson Beck, I think will, for the record, be really good.”
