Gary Danielson makes case for Stetson Bennett to win Heisman after SEC Championship win
As Georgia was wrapping up their victory in the SEC Championship Game, Gary Danielson made Stetson Bennett‘s case for the Heisman Trophy. According to the CBS commentator, Bennett’s dominance on the field and potential back-to-back national titles is a claim to the award that nobody else can touch for voters.
Gary Danielson on Stetson Bennett’s Heisman chances
Before the final whistle in Georgia’s 50-30 win against LSU, the CBS broadcast gave Danielson an opportunity to praise the incredible work Bennett has done leading Georgia to a perfect record and the potential No. 1 seed in the College Football Playoff. With Bennett taking the field to run out the clock some more in the fourth quarter, Danielson read aloud the description of what the Heisman Trophy was meant to represent for the winner.
“Sounds like they’re talking about that guy right there,” said Danielson about Bennett.
As they continued to discuss the upcoming Heisman voting process, Danielson countered that stats shouldn’t mean everything to voters when it comes to Bennett this year.

“How about back-to-back championships? Yeah, I mean he’s gotta be in the conversation … you gotta think about it when you vote. You gotta go, ‘alright let me think about this.’ There’s been other — I don’t know how far Stetson Bennett’s gonna go [after college football] — I’m not giving him any limit by the way. But there’s been non-NFL quarterbacks that won this before. I mean winners.”
Although Danielson’s argument was mostly rooted in the fact that Bennett just keeps winning on the field, the upcoming CFP rankings will set the stage for Bennett to become a fixture in the history books. If Georgia can manage to win the title again this season, Bennett would be only the fifth quarterback in the past 50 years to win back-to-back titles.
