Georgia baseball lands commitment from VCU transfer pitcher Brian Curley

Georgia Bulldogs baseball just picked up a huge acquisition out of the NCAA Transfer Portal. On Thursday afternoon, former VCU pitcher Brian Curley took to social media to announce that he is headed to Athens, GA, for the 2025 college baseball season.

Shotgun Spratling of D1 baseball reposted the right-handed pitcher’s transfer decision on X.

Curley was arguably VCU’s best pitcher in 2024 putting together some impressive numbers. He was primarily used as a relief pitcher but finished the year with a 6-0 record and an era of 2.87, which is an impressive mark especially given it was his sophomore season. Curley finished the year with 78 strikeouts and 78.1 innings pitched and was credited with three saves in his 19 appearances on the mound.

Johnson, Georgia announce lucrative contract extension through 2030

Georgia announced a new contract extension for baseball head coach Wes Johnson Wednesday, according to a release.

The new deal runs through the 2030 season. Georgia announced it as an “increased compensation package.”

Johnson released a statement upon signing his new deal, following a successful first year at the helm.

“I’d like to thank Josh Brooks, President Jere Morehead, and all our fans for their commitment to Georgia Baseball,” Johnson said. “We’ve received tremendous support, and if you drive by Foley Field right now, you can see the $45 million renovation currently underway that will enhance our program and help lead us to more success in the future.” 

This was the most successful year for Georgia since the team made the College World Series finals in 2008. The Bulldogs were the No. 7 seed for the NCAA Championships and were one game away from reaching the CWS, under Johnson.

“This past season is one we will always remember,” UGA athletic director Josh Brooks said. “It is a testament to the tremendous work that Coach Johnson and his staff did — and continue to do — in developing our student-athletes both on and off the field. Today is another great day for our program as we look to the future and watch Georgia baseball continue to excel under his leadership.”

Georgia went 43-17 this year, including a 17-13 record in the SEC, under Johnson in 2024. It was the school record for most overall wins and most SEC wins by a first-year coach.
