Kirby Smart has recruited so well at Georgia, there are future first-round picks having to wait their turn. Quarterback is no different, where there are some top-level players behind Stetson Bennett. Both Brock Vandagriff and Carson Beck were highly rated coming out of high school and have been competing since spring practice began.

Nobody knows the quarterbacks better than Sedrick Van Pran, who was the starting center for all 15 games last season. He recently detailed the difference between Beck, Bennett, and Vandagriff from an offensive line perspective. Van Pran said Bennett takes control more often, while Beck lets the center run the show unless his eye catches something.

“Not much, I think it’s very subtle things,” Van Pran said. “Certain quarterbacks like the ball at certain spots under center. Stetson wants to talk more about protections with me. Sideline, during plays. I think things like that. Carson has a lot more trust in me. Usually, whatever I see kind of goes unless he sees something to override it. Maybe a safety blitz or something but honestly, I feel like it’s more relationship things. It’s not much.”

Bennett and Vandagriff are both mobile and have the ability to run when the protection breaks down. Van Pran was asked if they have to change the way they block thanks to their dual-threat ability. He said while it helps the Georgia offensive linemen on the stat sheet, there’s not much difference with those two guys under center.

“That changes absolutely nothing for us,” Van Pran said. “Usually, if they’re running, that means we messed up. It’s not a good thing. It does help that you technically didn’t give up a sack with those guys on the run.”

After winning the national championship together last season, Bennett and Van Pran are expected to run it back again and lead the Georgia offense. However, Smart has made sure to get all of his signal-callers involved during spring practice. Beck and Vandagriff will be just as comfortable if thrown into game action thanks to the reps.

As for Van Pran himself, nobody on the Bulldogs played more snaps, with the official Georgia website saying he was on the field 90% of the time. After being a reserve player in 2020, he stepped into action and became an instant star this year. He played every offensive snap during eight games and was truly an iron man for the Bulldogs.

It’s evident his quarterbacks trust him heading into the 2022 season.
