Glenn Schumann Explains How Georgia Installs Defense, Early Observations Of Five-star Freshmen

Georgia freshman linebacker Raylen Wilson was banged up during Saturday’s scrimmage, Kirby Smart told reporters after the workout. Wilson suffered a hyperextended knee, according to DawgsHQ. Smart isn’t sure just yet how much time he will miss. He is hopeful it won’t be much.

“As of right now will reserve judgment. Ligaments are intact and he should be fine,” Smart said, according to DawgsHQ. “Coming out of it, we had a couple of ankles but I don’t know that we had a significant injury other than Raylen’s.”

Wilson signed with Georgia as one of the top players in the country for the class of 2023. He was ranked as the No. 4 linebacker and No. 29 overall player, according to the On3 Industry rankings.

He and CJ Allen both had impressive performances in the spring game, with Wilson returning an interception for a touchdown. Smart spoke about both linebackers then.

“I mean, they both showed up. And they had some mistakes and errors in the scrimmages. I wouldn’t say they’ve stood out,” Smart said. “Today, they had a couple of flash plays. I thought CJ really burst and tackle some people and closed. And Raylen really made the play of the game there. It was a ricochet play, ball that bounced off the right guy at the right time.”

Another big season ahead for Georgia

Georgia enters another season with the hype high as ever. The Bulldogs have been ranked No. 1 overall in the sport, as they look to defend their national title from a year ago and make it three straight.

The defense that Wilson is a part of is going to be crucial to make that happen. The last two seasons have been highlighted by Georgia defensive talent, including two first round draft picks in the 2023 NFL Draft from that defense. Could Wilson be on that same path one day? Time will tell.
