WATCH: Georgia players celebrate upset win over Alabama
Over the past recent years, whenever you hear Alabama and the Georgia Bulldogs are playing, you think of the instant classics on the football field. Watching head coaches Nick Saban and Kirby Smart battle it out has been the SEC’s staple matchup for a few seasons.
However, Tuesday saw the two programs meet at Stegeman Coliseum, where Georgia was looking to get their first SEC win of the season. Six consecutive losses were behind the Bulldogs and a struggling Crimson Tide team traveled to Athens.
Despite falling down by six at halftime, Tom Crean’s squad was able to secure a comeback victory thanks to consistent free-throw shooting. Four Georgia players ended the night in double figures, led by guard Aaron Cook with 15 points. As a team, the Bulldogs went 24 of 30 from the charity stripe.
Getting the first SEC win of the season is always a cause for celebration. After the game, Georgia players, cheerleaders, and the mascot sang and danced to “Swag Surf” with the crowd.

Georgia improved to 6-14 overall with the win but remained at the bottom of the SEC standings. A home matchup against Vanderbilt could be huge this weekend, with the opportunity to build a winning streak for just the second time this season.

For Alabama, the loss is detrimental for many reasons. From an NCAA Tournament perspective, this will be a bad loss when the committee is figuring out where to place in the Crimson Tide. And if they somehow end up on the bubble, it could knock them out of the competition completely and into the NIT.
A tough stretch of games are upcoming for Nate Oats’ squad as well. Three ranked opponents stare the Crimson Tide in the face with home games against Baylor and Kentucky, and a road trip to face in-state rival Auburn.
Georgia and Alabama will not meet again this season on the hardwood, pending the SEC Tournament in March. For now, the Bulldogs have bragging rights on both the court and the gridiron.
