Georgia special teams coordinator Scott Cochran announces one year of sobriety
One of college football’s more respected assistant coaches is Georgia‘s special team coordinator Scott Cochran. A long-time member of Nick Saban‘s staff in Alabama, he is now in Athens with head coach Kirby Smart and doing what he usually does — win national championships.
However, there is still more to life than just football. Every coach and player has a personal life and goes through their daily ups and downs. For Cochran, Monday was a positive day, with the Georgia assistant announcing one year of sobriety. He posted the news on Instagram, celebrating his accomplishment.
“Proud to be 1 year sober,” Cochran said. “This one means a lil more than the rings.”
In the Instagram photo, Cochran does show off those national championship rings, where he nearly has enough to fill up both his hands. While in Tuscaloosa, he won six with the Crimson Tide where he served as the strength and conditioning coach.
He has spent the last two seasons with Georgia, being hired prior to the 2020 season. Adding another ring to the collection did not take long, defeating his former program this past season in Indianapolis, making it seven total for Cochran.

Before the 2020 season, Scott Cochran had to step away from the program, wanting to “prioritize his mental health and well-being.” He rejoined the staff in Athens in October, during the Bulldogs’ bye week. Smart was thrilled to have his guys back involved with Georgia.
“He’s back with us officially, working with us,” Smart said back in October. “He’s going to be assisting the special teams staff and helping contribute in an off-field role for the rest of the season. Happy to have him back. Hopefully, going to keep him safe and healthy throughout that process, during the recovery process, but we’re glad to have his energy and enthusiasm back and he’ll help us kind of on an off the field role with special teams.”
Cochran continues to put out positive and encouraging news surrounding his health. And no better way to do it than on the Fourth of July.
