For the second straight week, Georgia finds itself atop the College Football Playoff rankings on the heels of a big, ranked victory. This time, though, it happened on the road.

The Bulldogs are coming off a resounding 38-10 victory over Tennessee — doing so at Neyland Stadium. It marked their second consecutive blowout win over a ranked team after defeating Ole Miss 52-10 to re-take the top spot in the CFP rankings. Based on the performance against the Volunteers, though, it sure feels like Georgia is starting to create some separation from the rest of the rankings.

That’s an interesting thought considering the top five teams are all undefeated. According to Boo Corrigan, the chairman of the College Football Playoff selection committee, Georgia’s performance in such a hostile environment helped them stay firmly atop the Top 25.

“We’re sitting on six total undefeated teams, five in the top five. I think it’s a pretty unique time for us,” Corrigan said on a post-reveal show teleconference. “But as we talked about it in the room, Tennessee scores on their first offensive play, whatever it is, 105, 110,000 people going crazy. To see Georgia score on six of their first eight possessions was incredibly impressive. It was incredibly impressive.

“But I think there’s a lot of really good football teams in the country right now, and they’re certainly one of them but not only one of them, they’re the team that we believe is the best team in the country right now.”

Boo Corrigan on the gap between Georgia, the rest of the CFP field: ‘You can’t get closer than 1 and 2’

As for the gap between the Bulldogs and No. 2 Ohio State — not to mention the rest of the field — Corrigan stuck to a familiar mentality. It’s all part of the evaluation process.

“I’ve said it before, you can’t get closer than 1 and 2,” Corrigan said on the ESPN broadcast. “Georgia was awful impressive last week. We’re one week away from having Ohio State in that first slot, so again, Ohio State goes offensively, puts up 39 points against Minnesota. Michigan scores in all three phases with a safety, a scoop and score and then three offensive touchdowns.

“So again, there’s a lot of really good football teams out there and we’re going to make sure that we evaluate everything we can going into this.”

Georgia entered the game against Tennessee starting to get healthy. The Bulldogs got Brock Bowers back against Ole Miss and looked like they had Ladd McConkey back in full, as well. However, he wasn’t targeted against Tennessee and wound up spending most of the game on the sidelines because his back tightened up, according to CBS’ Jenny Dell.

Still, Carson Beck turned in a big performance against the Vols, completing 24 of 30 passes for 298 yards and three touchdowns to lead the charge. The Bulldogs once again pulled off an 8-0 record in conference play, and that’s setting up a monster game in the SEC Championship against Alabama.
