Paul Finebaum, Heather Dinich debate how Georgia could miss College Football Playoff will loss vs. Alabama
Don’t think the Georgia Bulldogs making the College Football Playoff is automatic regardless of Saturday’s result against Alabama.
Paul Finebaum and Heather Dinich debated whether or not Georgia should still get into the final four should the team lose to Alabama in the SEC Championship Game. There are a lot of factors and contenders this year so things could get really murky with a Crimson Tide win.
However, Dinich is of the mind that despite only having one loss in this scenario, Georgia could miss out on the playoff losing to Alabama and not get a chance to three-peat.
“Yes, absolutely,” Dinich said on Get Up. “It never happened before. The Selection Committee is not judging UGA on those (last) 20 games or those back to back national titles. I know Paul is beside himself right now but hold on one second, because the difference this year is that there are more contenders out there.
“And I know Paul is talking about Florida State, but they did beat an SEC team, a top 20 SEC team in LSU, and that’s part of the resume that will have them in the top four if they beat their third top 25 team, Louisville. Go Paul go.”
Finebaum chalked up his Georgia argument to the playoff not being exactly legitimate, like the NFL for instance. Basically, there’s a lot of debate about who the best teams are rather than having a clear cut format to determine the best teams to play for the title.
“I think these things do have to count,” Finebaum said. “But I mean, this is why college football is so insanely fun. But it also makes people like me have their head explode. And at my age, I can’t afford my head to do anything other than have it stay on straight.

“I mean, this is literally absurd that these conversations we’re having, but sadly that’s what we have right now in college football. As opposed to a legitimate playoff like the NFL and hopefully college football will have next year.”
Should Georgia lose, Alabama is likely into the playoff. But then it depends if undefeated Michigan holds serve and goes undefeated and then if Washington is undefeated or Oregon emerges from the Pac-12 with one loss.
Let’s not forget Texas winning the Big 12 with one loss or Florida State remaining undefeated without its starting quarterback.
The chaos could ensue and Georgia still has an argument with a loss. But it’s sure to be a wild debate.
