Georgia football returns starting quarterback JT Daniels to lead the offense in 2021, but the depth chart behind him remains in flux. The Bulldogs enter the season with three quarterbacks battling for their place on the depth chart, remembering the importance of the QB2 position last season.

Offensive coordinator Todd Monken provided an update on the progress of each candidate during his Thursday press conference.

Carson Beck

“Well, we’re working through that right now,” said Monken. “We left spring with Carson (Beck) as our No. 2 quarterback, but we’re working through that now.”

Beck is redshirt freshman who came to Georgia as a 4-star recruit in 2020’s No. 1 class. He saw his first collegiate action against Missouri last season but did not record any stats. Beck turned heads throughout the spring practice period. He capped things off with 236 yards and two touchdowns at the annual G-Day spring game.

Brock Vandagriff

True freshman Brock Vandagriff is 5-star prospect who comes to Georgia as one of the top quarterbacks in the class. He enrolled early and took place in spring practices and had 47 yards on nine passes during the spring game.

“You know with Brock (Vandergriff) it’s hard to assess a freshman player that comes in, in the Spring and we put a lot on those guys, and so right away they’re not able to really show their ability because they are processing so much,” said Monken. “It slows down their feet. Slows down some of those things, but it has been tremendous there.”

Stetson Bennett

Another candidate for the second spot on the depth chart is former starting quarterback Stetson Bennett, who played eight games for Georgia in 2020.

“Obviously, Stetson (Bennett), and Stetson has greatly improved,” said Monken. “So, we’re still in the process of evaluating that, and the next two scrimmages will have a lot to say with that in terms of how we end up going in the first game.”

Monken recognizes the difficult situation Bennett finds himself in this season. After throwing for 1,179 yards and eight touchdowns last season, he is now battling for a backup role.

“I’ve been pleased with all four of them, and especially the other guys, Stetson, to be commended because it hasn’t been easy. You go from being a starter to, hey you’re competing with other guys for just the backup spot or the third spot, but he’s worked awfully hard. He’s really intelligent, and he has improved a ton. We are fired up about the group.”
