Wes Johnson reflects on Georgia's accomplishments in his first season
The Georgia Bulldogs came up short in their winner-take-all Athens Super Regional final on Monday night, falling to NC State in an 8-5 loss that punched the Wolfpack’s ticket to the College World Series and eliminated the Bulldogs from the postseason.
Georgia was just a few plays away from returning to Omaha for the first time since 2008. And even though their season came to an end in a painful way, there’s no question that it was still a success overall in year one under head coach Wes Johnson.

Following Monday’s game, Johnson opened up about the accomplishments of this year’s Georgia team and how they were able achieve instant success.
“You just got a bunch of guys together who started believing in themselves and then believing in each other,” Johnson said. “And when you do that, as I’ve said for years in this league, there’s talent in this league. And if you can get the right group together, and get them to believe in themselves, and have confidence, and go out there and take the training we put them through daily that you have a chance.”
“What this group of men did was something I’ll obviously never forget.”
Georgia represented the first collegiate head coaching job of Johnson’s career, spending over a decade as a pitching coach across seven different college programs along with four years at the MLB level with the Minnesota Twins. Clearly showing he was ready for the role after leading the Bulldogs to a 43-17 record this season, their best since 2019.

Along with having the SEC Player of the Year Charlie Condon, who led the nation in batting average, home runs, and slugging percentage, Georgia as a team also ranked top five in the nation in homers, slugging percentage, and on-base percentage. Boasting one of the nation’s best offenses that had a knack for hitting the long ball.
Georgia homered twice on Monday, but it wasn’t enough to overcome an NC State squad who’s offense was firing on all cylinders during the Supers. Ending the three-game series with 44 hits, 28 runs, and 10 home runs.
The Bulldogs will now look ahead to the 2025 season, where they’ll need to replace their fair share of impact players in the competitive SEC that also adds Texas and Oklahoma to the fold next year.
