Kirby Smart explains why Georgia has been playing in more close games

Georgia extended their unbeaten start to the season this weekend with a 42-10 victory over Auburn in the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry. The Bulldog’s most recent win was their first dominant one in a while, escaping in narrow, upset victories to Missouri and Kent State the two previous weeks. Head coach Kirby Smart was asked about what factors have made their games closer as of late, and apparently there are infinite.
“Well the factors are truly limitless when you factor in millions of things that come to impact a game, whether it’s what they’re doing, what we’re doing, headspace, the location, time of day, the temperature, I mean you could factor a million things into that,” Smart said.
Football is a unique game with tons of moving parts and components that can make a variety of impressions on any given game, hence the weekly parity and unpredictable nature of the sport that attracts such an audience. But Smart did elaborate on some of the specifics from opponents’ play and their own that may have impacted the ways in which they’ve been winning.

“At the end of the day you want to execute at a high level and sometimes the person aligned across from you does a good job at the point of attack and stops that, and you’ve gotta find other ways to attack them where you can win at,” Smart explained. “In some cases is has nothing to do with the opponent and has everything to do with us just executing better.”

Through the first three weeks of the season the Bulldog’s average margin of victory was 40 points, but in their last three games, it has been 17.6. There are clearly a lot of different reasons as to why that may be the case, but at the end of the day, Smart believes it all comes down to their own execution and consistency.
“But that’s not anything to do with our offense or how we started on Oregon or how we did on defense, it’s just to be honest with you having 11 guys on the same page executing better more consistently. And I think if we get that across the board, you’ll always have good results,” Smart said.
