Georgia‘s quarterback competition is one of the the most significant in the country, as the Bulldogs look to replace back-to-back national championship winner Stetson Bennett under center this offseason. Carson Beck brings the most experience to the table in the Bulldogs’ quarterback battle, and recently spoke about how spring practice has been going for himself.

“I thought it’s going good” Beck said. “The biggest thing is just trying to get better each and every day, have the right attitude coming out, and focused on me and what I can do physically, mentally, building relationships with teammates. We got a few new guys out there, trying to get to know them better and connect with them on a deeper level. Because that’s really what it comes down to, we’re a team, we’re a family, and just trying to take that role and keep getting better.”

Beck enrolled at Georgia in January of 2020 out of Mandarin High School in Florida. He’s spent the last two seasons behind Bennett as the Bulldogs’ backup quarterback, which is not the easiest job in the world. He also spoke on the mindset of playing that role and its transition for the new role he’s pursuing, Georgia’s starting quarterback.

“Every year is individual of itself and I think every quarterback honestly should feel that way every single year they step into. Even last year with Stetson, he just came off a national championship, of course every day I walked out there I felt like I was the guy. And I think that’s the mindset that you have to have at the position of quarterback because there’s only one guy out there, so when you get your opportunity you got to seize it,” Beck said.

It’s clear Beck doesn’t lack in confidence, and for good reason. In his limited snaps last season, which was mostly when the Bulldogs were up big in games, Beck completed 74.3% of his pass attempts for 310 yards and four touchdown passes.

This exceeds the experience of anyone else in Georgia’s quarterback room, but per usual, there’s plenty of talent in Athens. Talent that Beck is now mentally prepared to compete against after waiting his turn the last three seasons.

“Well obviously it’s really difficult and I think it’s difficult for anybody when you come out of high school and really everybody that has come here that’s had to sit. We’re all guys, I mean four-star, five-star guys here, we’ve had a ton of them as you guys know. But there’s been a lot of guys that have had to sit and I’m sure everyone would agree with me it’s very difficult and you build a mindset of okay I’m going to wait my turn and whatever but now it’s finally time so you gotta start to remember kind of what you were, what you did in high school, that mindset of I’m the guy,” Beck said. “You’ve got to believe that.”

Georgia fans will get a chance to see if Beck looks like ‘the guy’ on April 15 when the Bulldogs hold their annual G Day spring game.
