The Georgia Bulldogs suspended assistant men’s basketball coach Wade Mason indefinitely on Friday. Mason is suspended indefinitely following an altercation between him and Georgia’s director of player development Brian Fish during halftime of Wednesday’s game at LSU. Georgia lost to the Tigers 84-65 on Wednesday. No statement had been made at the time of Mason’s suspension. But on Saturday, Georgia released a pretty strong statement.

“There have been various media reports related to UGA Athletics personnel ranging from completely inaccurate to incomplete and premature,” Georgia said in its statement, via The Athletic’s Seth Emerson. “The incident in question was reported properly as required by university policies and is under review. We will comment if and when appropriate.”

Georgia head men’s basketball coach Tom Crean is expected to address the situation on Saturday, as the Bulldogs are set to take on Ole Miss. Crean’s pregame media interviews were canceled on Friday after news broke about Mason’s suspension.

Mason initially joined Georgia’s coaching staff in June of 2021 after five years at Stephen F. Austin. He has also worked at Oral Roberts as an assistant coach from 2012-2016 and at Oklahoma as a graduate assistant before then.

It has been a forgettable season for Georgia

Frustration is undoubtedly building up for Georgia, as illustrated by Wednesday’s incident and the ensuing suspension and statement. The Bulldogs are currently 6-20 overall, and just 1-12 against SEC opponents. Georgia has won just one game after December 20, coming against Alabama on January 25. Since beating Western Carolina on December 20 and reaching 5-6 on the year, Georgia has gone just 1-14.

The Bulldogs are currently on a six-game losing streak and have lost 14 of their previous 15 games. With just five games remaining in the regular season, Georgia is running out of time to put together any wins. The Bulldogs’ remaining schedule includes home dates with Ole Miss, Florida, and No. 16 Tennessee, and road trips to Texas A&M and Missouri.
