Joel Klatt feels like Georgia should be uncomfortable with results
Georgia is off to another 5-0 start to the season, but fans have been less than impressed with the Bulldogs’ strength of schedule — and their performance in games they’re expected to dominate.
Fox Sports’ Joel Klatt revealed the pulse of the Georgia program heading into Week 6.
“If I’m a Georgia fan, I’m uncomfortable right now,” Klatt said on Wednesday. “You’re back-to-back defending national champions and yet, we have a team that seems to play down to the level of their competition.
“Basically, because they’re not as great as they have been in the trenches over the past two years — they’re a shell of their former selves in the running game and stopping the run, which is a problem. They went down a yard in yards per carry from last year and they went from a top-three defense to a defense that is 67th in the country.”
That spells disaster against a rushing attack like Kentucky‘s. Transfer running back Ray Davis made a joke out of Florida‘s defense last week and what was the SEC’s top rushing defense. He totaled 280 rushing yards and five total touchdowns on the afternoon and is looking to pick apart the Bulldogs’ defense with a similar performance.
According to Klatt, Georgia can’t keep finding themselves in close-game situations, or their entire season could be in jeopardy on a weekly basis.

“That means you’re going to be in situations like South Carolina at home, Auburn on the road. You don’t want to be in those situations. On the back of that, you don’t have the ammunition that you have had in the SEC over the last few years and it’s an uncomfortable feeling. I think Georgia has to win out. I don’t know if Georgia wins an argument to get into the playoff as a one-loss team — and that’s wild.”
On the other hand, Klatt said that he believes the committee would likely just throw the Bulldogs into the mix if they were anywhere near the top four for storyline’s sake. The three-peat would be Georgia’s to lose on a national stage — but then the Bulldogs would be relying on politics rather than on-field play.
They’ll have to get past their toughest test of the season so far against No. 20 Kentucky in Athens on Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET live on ESPN. The Bulldogs are 14.5-point favorites heading into the weekend.
