The Georgia Bulldogs were without defensive back Joenel Aguero for their game against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. Now, head coach Kirby Smart has shared some insight into the injury issues he’s been battling.

Smart explained during his pregame press conference for the SEC Championship Game against Texas that Aguero was initially injured in the Ole Miss game and that required surgery. Since then, it’s been a challenge for him to play while wearing a club.

“Yeah, since the Ole Miss game he’s had to have a surgery and a pin put in,” Kirby Smart said. “He’s been trying to practice and play with a club. It’s been tremendously tough for him to be able to do that. He’s out of the club now and in a much better position to be able to practice and play. He’s practiced each week and stayed with us. It’s just been tougher playing with the use of really one hand, and he’s back now and able to do a lot more this week. Hopeful that he can help us.”

Georgia’s final two games of the season came against non-conference opponents, so they were not required to provide availability reports. However, Joenel Aguero has appeared on past reports this season for the Bulldogs.

This season, Joenel Aguero has played in nine games after playing in 13 games last season. This year, he’s made 22 total tackles and two tackles for a loss. During his freshman season, he broke up a pass and had seven total tackles.

Joenel Aguero came to Georgia as a four-star recruit in the Class of 2023, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, out of St. John’s (MA). He was the third-ranked safety and the 47th-ranked player overall in that recruiting cycle.

Georgia is currently preparing for the SEC Championship Game where they’ll play Texas. Earlier in the season, the Bulldogs beat the Longhorns 30-15 on the back of a dominant first half effort. Still, Kirby Smart and the rest of the team know that a win doesn’t guarantee anything moving forward. That means having as much depth as possible and getting players like Joenel Aguero healthy, is going to be vital.
