Jordan Davis has 'godzilla like' impact on Georgia defense

The Georgia Bulldogs have assembled one of college football’s most stout defenses of the 21st century, anchored by 340-pound defensive tackle Jordan Davis. Swallowing up two and three offensive players per play, Davis has drawn national attention for his growth on the football field, but coach Kirby Smart believes his breakout star deserves more attention.

Following Georgia’s 30-13 win over Kentucky, Smart was asked how Davis’ size and skill helps the defense. He responded with an all-time comparison.

“Godzilla like,” Kirby Smart said about Jordan Davis. “He’s impactful, an immovable object… He’s been impactful in stopping the run and allowing us to play alternative coverages that you can’t do sometimes when people can run the ball.”

Davis has become one of college football’s most recognizable defensive players. At 6-foot-6 and 340-pounds, he is also one of college football’s biggest players.

“He buys into staying healthy and keeping his weight down,” said Smart. “He’s a really good player and he’s bought into that, he understands it’s important. The young man is under a tremendous microscope in terms of media – for a d-lineman – maybe not for a quarterback. He does everything he can to the best of his ability, he works hard for us.”

The senior defensive tackle has 77 career tackles with seven sacks and 10 tackles for loss. The towering frontline presence blocked a kick in 2020 and nearly got his hand on two more against Kentucky, but his teammates touched first.

“He’s definitely a bright spot – and more importantly he’s very entertaining in meetings – and he’s a great personality,” said Smart. “People that don’t know him should get to know him because he’s fun to be around. Embrace him.”

According to Davis’ bio on GeorgiaDogs.com, he is a religion major and a recipient of the Roger F. and Michael A. Kahn Football Scholarship. He came to Georgia as just a three-star recruit, hailing from Mallard Creek High School in North Carolina.
