Kirby Smart acknowledges Colbie Young arrest, legal situation

Georgia wide receiver Colbie Young was arrested on Tuesday on two misdemeanor charges. The first of which is battery and then assault on an unborn child, being booked by the Athens Clarke County Police at 4:18 a.m. ET. As of Tuesday morning, Young was still incarcerated as of Tuesday morning at with a bond amount of $2,500.
During his press conference later in the day, Kirby Smart acknowledged Young’s arrest and legal situation but did not provide any comment. Smart revealed there has not even been a conversation between him and Young yet.
“It’s a pending legal matter,” Smart said. “I don’t have any answers right now. I haven’t even had a chance to talk to him yet. So, I can’t answer any questions about it right now.”
Through five games, Young is Georgia’s fourth-leading receiver, having 11 receptions for 149 yards and two touchdowns. Quarterback Carson Beck is not afraid to spread the wealth but Young has been one of the top targets.
After back-to-back games against Alabama and Auburn, Georgia’s next game will take place on Saturday against Mississippi State. Smart said the wide receiver is not with the program on Tuesday but no future determination has been made. Since the legal matter is still pending, Smart will wait to make a decision on Young’s status.

“Like I said, it’s a pending legal matter,” Smart said. “He’s not with us today, haven’t had the chance to talk to him.”
This is far from the first arrest Georgia has dealt with in recent times. Well over double-digit Bulldogs have been in legal trouble ever since the program won its first national championship back in 2021. It’s been a continual topic of conversation for Smart, even as his team wins on the field.
“I’ll be honest with you, in my years of coaching, it’s probably been the hardest thing to deal with,” Smart said. “It’s a very sensitive matter and very tough to deal with. It’s unfortunate.”
