The Georgia Bulldogs heard it from coach Kirby Smart after the coach felt his team’s practice on Tuesday was a bad one. Smart said after the practice that he felt his team’s energy was not at the level it needs to be if they want to repeat as national champions.

Georgia enters the second week of the season ranked second in the latest AP rankings behind Alabama, and without a chance to play the Crimson Tide before the SEC championship game — if they both reach it — each week’s result matters if they hope to take the No. 1 spot.

Just a few days after his team’s dominant debut with a 49-3 win over Oregon, Smart felt that the Bulldogs came out to practice in a disappointing way on Tuesday.

“You go out on Tuesday and you practice physical if you want to be good,” said Smart via Dawgs HQ.

Smart went on to explain that he felt a lack of energy and enthusiasm was the problem with their practice, clearly using the opportunity as a coaching moment. The defending national champions entered the season as a clear top program in the nation, but questions about their ability to be back-to-back champions have followed them throughout fall camp as a multitude of stars left for the NFL last year.

Their debut game against the Ducks put many of those questions to rest as they easily handled their Pac-12 opponent. This week’s opponent is an FCS matchup with Samford — a game that Smart is determined to get his team ready for. If the Bulldogs felt like this week would be an easier one for them, Smart was quick to hammer home the message that they need to prepare every week like it’s for the title — as an SEC championship and national title run are the clear goals for Georgia.
