The Georgia Bulldogs crowned coach Kirby Smart with a traditional Gatorade bath after winning their second national title in a row on Monday. The Bulldogs dominated TCU 65-7 in the 2023 National Championship Game, becoming the first team in the College Football Playoff era to repeat as champions.

With back-to-back championships, Georgia became the first team to repeat as national champions since Alabama did it in 2011-12. They are also just the third team since 1970 to repeat, after Nebraska accomplished the feat as well in 1994-95. The title is the fourth one in program history, giving the Bulldogs two championships after a 41-year drought when they won in 1980 — this time completing the undefeated season.

The Bulldogs began the game hot and built up a 10-0 lead early with a rushing touchdown from Stetson Bennett. Quickly afterwards, the Horned Frogs responded with a rushing touchdown of their own from Max Duggan to cut the lead to 10-7.

From there, Georgia rattled off an incredible 55 unanswered points against the Horned Frogs to completely dominate the championship game. Bennett was responsible for six total touchdowns in the win, tying for the most in National Championship Game history, with four passing and two rushing scores.

After the game, Smart was quick to share high praise for his quarterback and the incredible numbers the duo has produced in the win column over the past two seasons.

“Well, he’s meant a lot to me personally because of what he’s gone through and what how’s put up with from the outside noise,” Smart said. “But to this university — to a kid that was told he was not good enough — to come back and win two national championships. He’s really phenomenal. He did some things tonight that are just electric. And he’s just one of a kind, he’s a special football player.”
