Kirby Smart has a way of doing things that resonates with his team like few coaches in the sport of football. In a press conference earlier this week, Smart gave an intriguing take on complacency and day-to-day routine.

“I look at every day as independent of the other. Feel like a broken record,” stated the Georgia Bulldogs coach. “The only thing that changes is your team, right? You have different players, you have different coaches, you have different demands. And I just go with the theory of W-I-N — win what’s important now.

“When I get up in the morning, what’s most important today? I need to call this mother, I gotta call this player, I gotta talk to this kid, I gotta make sure these coaches know what we’re doing in this situation, I need to decide how we’re going to practice, and I really just live day-by-day. Because I don’t look at it as routine or monotonous, because I’m trying to do it different. You know? I’m trying to change it up, have a different way of doing it. Excite the players.

“Just develop young men, and I don’t think that’s routine. I don’t think you get into a routine — I think when you get into a routine, you can get complacent. And complacency will be the killer of us all.”

If Kirby Smart gave into complacency, Georgia never would’ve captured their first title in over 40 years. The Bulldogs will continue to follow Smart’s leadership, and they’re in good hands while doing so.

Kirby Smart raises concerning question about Georgia’s title defense

As Georgia begins its national championship title defense with spring practice, head coach Kirby Smart is already calling out leadership questions about his new-look roster. After watching practice on Tuesday, he called out the veterans and newcomers alike with a concerning critique.

During a press conference, Kirby Smart called the leadership of his new Georgia team into question, telling DawgsHQ that they are not where they need to be yet.

“We’re not where we need to be with leadership, guys challenging guys,” said Smart. “I was a little disappointed in (today’s) practice.”

The new-look Bulldogs still have a long way to go in Smart’s eyes before claiming back-to-back national championships.

The lack of leadership might come as a surprise within such a big program with nature leaders on the coaching staff, but does not come without context. Georgia lost much of its dominant defense to the NFL Draft or graduation this offseason, along with several key offensive players.
