The Georgia Bulldogs held a scrimmage on Saturday following a heavy dose of spring practices. Head coach Kirby Smart didn’t appear to be too thrilled with it his team’s level of execution in the scrimmage. But there were some positives for the Bulldogs headman regarding the topic of injuries. Following Georgia’s scrimmage, Smart provided a positive update on the current rash of injuries affecting the running back position.

“I don’t think we lost anybody today. We have several guys that weren’t able to scrimmage today, but we didn’t lose anybody within the scrimmage,” said Smart. “Daijun’s been dealing with a hamstring, so he’s been in and out. I mean, he’s hitting some good mph. I think that Daijun’s really close and might’ve could’ve pushed it over the edge today, to go, to give us some more depth at back. But we didn’t do that with the hopes that two days off, Sunday Monday, we’ll have him ready to go Tuesday.”

Getting Daijun Edwards back during spring practice would be a huge boost for the Bulldogs’ offense. Unfortunately, the outlook for Kendall Milton does not appear to be as promising.

“Obviously, with Kendall’s injury, he’s out. But Branson (Robinson) did a good job. I think we ended up getting around 10 carries for Branson, about 10 carries for Rod (Roderick Robinson II), which is a lot for us in the scrimmage. The guys that haven’t played in games in the fall, we try to get them 11 to 12 a scrimmage. The guys that have played a lot of games, we try to get four to five a scrimmage.

“But those guys did a nice job. Sevaughn Clark went over there did a good job. As you know, Cash (Jones) has been working in that position; he does a really good job. And we’ve got a couple of guys, (Joseph) Daniels and (Miles) Thornton, that moved there from DB and receiver who have actually been a blessing for us. Two walk-ons — one’s a wideout, (and) one’s a DB that have done a really good job.”

Fortunately, Smart has been able to make a few adjustments moving people around all over his roster to make up for the lack of bodies at running back. While missing some of the key contributors early might seem like a big deal, it has given the Bulldogs the opportunity to build depth at the position. And that will be huge for next season, especially if Georgia can send wave after wave of quality running back to wear down their opponent’s defense.
