Kirby Smart talks about 'rare' ability of Brock Bowers as a freshman
Georgia freshman tight end Brock Bowers has had an incredible first year in college football and even landed first-team All-SEC honors. The matchup nightmare has utilized his freaky combination of game-breaking speed, leaping ability, and hands to become one of the best tight ends in America. A reporter during the SEC championship game teleconference on Sunday asked Georgia head coach Kirby Smart about Bowers’ evolution and whether or not he had ever coached a player that is comparable to the superstar freshman.
“There’s been special freshmen that you go against, and now that you’re asking that question, nothing really pops out. There’s been really talented wideouts to me, and there’s been really talented like backs because I feel like, to play running back and receiver in our conference, it’s the one place that an elite, really good prospect can walk in and impact a game. It’s less getting overpowered out there,” Smart said.
The Georgia head coach continued to rave about how rare and unique his skill set is.
“It’s rare to me to see a tight end and do the things he’s done as a freshman. I think we’re going to see it more and more with these kids coming midyear because it helped Brock to get here and get started where he did and get that timing under his belt. Just no moment has been too big for him. Going back to the Clemson game, it was just another game to him. We knew from that game when he started out catching it, running after the catch, I mean, he made some plays that this guy is going to be a weapon. I can’t think of any. There have been some really, really talented freshmen in our conference. But just at that position, it’s kind of unique,” he said.
There’s a number of jaw-dropping plays you could choose from in Bower’s 2021 highlight tape. Check out the leaping touchdown grab he had against Georgia Tech last weekend.
Simply put, there is no way any team in the country can defend that. What an unreal combination of athleticism and hands from Bowers.

The uber-talented freshman has shattered several records during his freshman season with Georgia, including the most touchdown catches by a tight end in a single season in Bulldog football history. He’s also racked up the most receiving yards in a single season by a freshman at Georgia. Did I mention he’s also got the SEC championship game and potentially two playoff games to continue padding his stats?
The kid is an absolute freak. So far in 2021, he’s hauled in 37 catches for 652 receiving yards and 10 touchdown catches. As lethal as Bowers is for the ‘Dawgs, just wait until they get to line up 2022 commitment, four-star tight end Oscar Delp with him on the same field.
Delp is ranked as the third best tight end in America in the 2022 recruiting class, according to the On3 Consensus Rankings.
