Kirby Smart 'very comfortable' with where Georgia is offensively
After two national championship seasons, Georgia has seen a lot of turnover on their roster. That includes their offense which is off to a slower start with several new pieces, specifically a new quarterback and offensive coordinator.
However, Kirby Smart isn’t at all bothered about the Bulldog offense. He actually came to its defense in his press conference on Monday. He said nothing is wrong with it considering it’s the same exact playbook that they’ve been running the past few years in Athens.
“The offense that we’ve played this year is the exact same offense that we’ve played for the last three years,” Smart said. “Look at the plays. Anybody that knows football would tell you that the plays are the same.”
Smart did then go on to admit that some of the execution and, therefore, playmaking and scoring haven’t been at the same level. Even so, there are enough justifiable reasons for that at the moment which is why, after three weeks, he isn’t concerned one bit about the ‘Dawg’s offense.
“Our execution in the red area hasn’t been great. (We) haven’t scored as many points, haven’t been as explosive or as dynamic,” said Smart. “Some of that has to do with players being out, some of that has to do with executing. But I’m very comfortable with where we are offensively.”
Georgia is averaging 39 points and 467.7 yards of offense per game over their first three games in 2023. As of now, that’s 2.1 points and 33.5 yards off the averages of last year’s team.
It’s the way Georgia has started their games, though, that has concerned some this fall. In their three first quarters, they’ve scored a combined 10 points. They’ve eventually gotten going in all of the games as they’ve averaged 35.7 points in the other three quarters. Still, the slow starts could be an issue moving forward, especially considering the halftime score of their win over South Carolina this weekend.
It’s completely normal for Carson Beck, Mike Bobo, and this offense to still be finding its footing. That’s why, considering all things, Smart has already given his offense a pass through three games.

Smart reveals Amarius Mims will miss time with ankle sprain, surgery
Georgia’s offense lost a key piece over the weekend as starting RT Amarius Mims suffered a sprained ankle.
According to Kirby Smart, Mims will have tightrope surgery and he’ll be out for a number of games moving forward. Seth Emerson of The Athletic reported the Georgia offensive lineman’s timetable seems to be 4-6 weeks.
“We don’t know how long that’ll be,” Smart said on Monday via Emerson. “He’ll be back, we just don’t know how long.”
Mims went down in the first half of the contest against South Carolina with an apparent leg injury as he went to make a block in the second quarter but ended up walking to the locker room. He did not return to the playing field.
Time will tell when Amarius Mims can return to the field but Georgia will certainly miss him until he does.
