For the first time in a long time, Georgia entered a game as underdogs. Texas was favored by just over a field goal depending on where you got lines. Playing in Austin certainly helped but Steve Sarkisian‘s team was ranked No. 1 and fresh off a huge rivalry win vs. Oklahoma.

Well, Georgia came out and as ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit put it postgame, reminded college football who is the top dog. There was some doubt surrounding the Bulldogs following a loss to Alabama and sloppy performances thereafter. All that noise is now gone after getting a huge win against Texas.

“What we were reminded tonight, as a sport, is Georgia, despite what happened in Tuscaloosa, is still Georgia,” Herbstreit said. “They still recruit, they still develop, they still have incredible pride, and they felt slighted. When you make a football team, collectively, feel slighted, they’re going to bring the fastball and that’s what they did. They played with a chip on their shoulder and we learned tonight — when they play like that, they’re going to be a hard team to knockout.”

Texas was a popular pick heading into the game, with the entire ESPN College GameDay panel picking the Longhorns to win. From Desmond Howard all the way down to Lee Corso’s head selection, the graphic on Saturday morning had a whole lot of burnt orange.

Kirby Smart mentioned that during his on-field postgame press conference and Chris Fowler joked with Herbstreit about “your network” doubting Georgia. However, Herbstreit was quick to remind the audience at home he did not make a prediction.

“I didn’t make a pick but everybody I believe on College GameDay picked Texas,” Herbstreit said. “It was all week talking about Texas.”

We will have to wait and see for the polls to come out on Sunday but Georgia will be higher than the No. 5 ranking they entered the night with. Multiple Big Ten teams are currently ranked ahead of them but taking down No. 1 on the road might see a jump somewhere.

Instant reaction from Herbstreit, he knows who is still the top-tier program in college football.
