What will Georgia Bulldogs Head Coach Kirby Smart say at SEC Media Days?

Ladd McConkey has a chance to expand his trophy case in 2023, and not just with another national championship. Likely to land himself on the Biletnikoff Award watchlist on Aug. 7, — the Georgia star was also added to the short list of names for two other prestigious awards.

McConkey was recently put on the watchlist for the Wuerffel and William V. Campbell Trophy, which both set out to recognize players for their performance on the field along with in the classroom and the community.

“It’s a really big honor to be able to do more than just football,” McConkey said. “At the end of the day, we’re not just football players — but there are so many guys that do it with me. We had Camp Sunshine and there were like 10 of us that went. So, it’s not just me but it is cool to be recognized and be put up for those awards.”

Camp Sunshine, which is a retreat for children and their families with life-threatening illnesses. Their goal is to, “enrich the lives of Georgia’s children with cancer and their families through year-round recreational, educational and support program.” You can find the group of Georgia players that made the trip here. Obviously, McConkey was front and center.

In July, McConkey was also nominated for the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, recognizing his outstanding achievements in athletics, academics, and community service. He has a history of taking care of everyone from children in schools, to signing one elderly man’s jersey on a special home visit.

That’s the effort that the fans don’t see — and it’s even more special to see one of the stars of Georgia’s national title efforts the past two years willing to give back in that way.

Still, that doesn’t mean he’s taking his foot off the gas in 2023. Named to the preseason All-SEC First Team by media members, McConkey is poised for a breakout season after hauling in 58 receptions for 762 yards and seven touchdowns in 2022. He also scored two rushing touchdowns — something the Bulldogs might want to see more of this season.

The Bulldogs kick off the 2023 campaign on Sept. 2 against UT Martin at home. They’ll have another warmup match against Ball State the following week before starting SEC play a little early during Week 3 with a home stand against a South Carolina team with high expectations for themselves after a strong close to last season.
