Mike Bobo shares impressions of Georgia quarterbacks in fall camp
Georgia is in the midst of an interesting quarterback battle, and nobodies opinion on the matter means more than offensive coordinator Mike Bobo.
He’ll likely have the biggest say on whether it’s Carson Beck or Brock Vandagriff starting for the Bulldogs in 2023, though Kirby Smart will sign off on it, of course. Ahead of that decision being made, Bobo shared his impressions of his quarterback options’ play throughout fall camp.
“We’re basically finishing up our last day of install today, and then tomorrow will be a review and then we’ll have the scrimmage, but I’ve been pleased with all the quarterbacks,” explained Bobo. “We’ve been focusing on the process, of each practice and each install. Focusing on what we can control in that moment. These guys have done a great job. There’s been some ups and downs, but they’ve been focused. They come into every meeting ready to go, prepared before the meeting, and then Saturday is the scrimmage. It’s the closest thing that we can get to a game. It’s how are you going to handle those situations when you’re out there with a team by yourself? There’s no coaches on the field, and the bottom line for a quarterback, it’s can you execute? Are you going to be able to execute, and get us in the right play, get us in the right protection, run the offense, handle third down situations, red zone situations.
“That’s what we’re looking for. Handling those situations in the game. Having continuity on offense.”
Moreover, Beck has the most experience of the two quarterbacks, and turned in a strong showing in the spring game. But Vandagriff is making things interesting despite a rough showing in the spring scrimmage, and that’s why he’s adding more intrigue to the competition.

The biggest question, though, comes with how Kirby Smart looks at experience as a factor. Beck has appeared in 10 games over the last two years while Vandagriff has played in just four. That difference could be a key factor in Smart’s decision.
After a couple successful seasons of Stetson Bennett carrying the flag for Georgia, the Bulldogs can’t really afford to miss an opportunity for a three-peat. Quarterback is by far their biggest question, and they’re looking to nail this decision once again.
Regardless, Georgia will be regarded as the top team in the country, but if they can’t get consistent play from their quarterback, it could unravel everything in 2023.
