Paul Finebaum identifies what was 'off' with Georgia's sleep-walking win over Kent State

If you checked the scoreboard on Saturday and saw Kent State put 22 points on Georgia, it wasn’t a typo — that really happened.
Paul Finebaum was one of those who was surprised to see the Bulldogs struggle, one week after he called Kirby Smart’s squad the new Alabama. On Sunday, the SEC Network host joined SportsCenter on ESPN to identify what went wrong for Georgia against the Golden Flashes on Saturday.

“It seems like a week ago someone sat right here and declared Georgia the new Alabama. Yesterday, they looked like the old Georgia. They didn’t have anything going for them,” stated Finebaum. “I think it’s a classic case of overlooking the opposition, which turned out to be pretty good. Stetson Bennett was off. Everything about the game was off. Could it have been the new kickoff, could it have just been they’re in a stretch of the schedule where it’s hard to get fired up.
“If they weren’t fired up for this team, wait for the next team, which is Missouri, which was awful yesterday. Wait for the next team, which was Auburn, who played Missouri and they were both dreadful. Then they get to play Vanderbilt, which we just got through seeing. They’re in for about a month of snoozing.”
While the aforementioned Stetson Bennett has been receiving Heisman hype for his play in 2022, he won’t include his game against Kent State in his reel. The Georgia quarterback passed for just 272 yards and an interception, a surprising stat-line for the quarterback.

At least star tight end Brock Bowers had a solid day, including an impressive rushing touchdown to begin the day where he took the rock 75 yards to the house. Additionally, Bowers scored on his other carry, taking a two-yard carry into the end-zone for the Bulldogs later in the game, as well.
As Paul Finebaum mentioned, some SEC squads are on the docket for Georgia in the coming weeks, but it isn’t the most impressive of competition. Still, the Bulldogs have showdowns with Tennessee and Florida to follow after the relaxing stretch.
It’ll be all about getting Georgia ready for the latter showdowns for Kirby Smart, and avoiding a disaster of an upset in the coming weeks. If the Bulldogs can do that, the road back to the SEC Championship and College Football Playoff is right in-front of them.
