Paul Finebaum trusts Georgia more than other top-ranked teams in college football
History holds a special place in Paul Finebaum’s heart. On Sunday, Matt Barrie asked the SEC Network analyst which team he has the most faith in, Finebaum pointed to the No. 1 team: Georgia.
“I cannot trust Michigan yet, because I just don’t know what they’re capable of. I know Georgia has been into games that they’ve prevailed when things were rough,” Finebaum said. “I know Ohio State has played some tough games. Florida State, the Clemson game showed me a lot, but they were lucky to win.
“The [FSU]-LSU game was so far away in the past that I don’t know what to make of it. I mean, I respect what they’re doing incredibly. I just feel comfortable in Georgia a little more comfortable only because I think it’s the middle of the season and they’re starting to turn it on.”
Georgia picked up its seventh win this season on Saturday in a comfortable 37-20 triumph over Vanderbilt. In the win, UGA racked up 551 total yards while holding Vanderbilt to 219 yards on offense.
It hasn’t always been a walk in the park for the Bulldogs this season. In Week 3, Georgia squeezed out a 24-14 win over South Carolina, who boasted an 11-point lead over UGA at halftime. Then, just two weeks later, the Bulldogs narrowly defeated an unranked Auburn squad 27-20.

Nonetheless, Georgia kept its nose to the grindstone. The team reasserted its dominance with a stunning 51-13 blowout win over No. 20 Kentucky. As mentioned, they followed up the act with a comfortable win over the Commodores.
Georgia is the favorite, but not a lock
It hasn’t always been pretty, but it doesn’t need to be. Georgia is still the No. 1 and has not lost since Dec. 4, 2021. Although Finebaum is still most confident in Georgia, he knows anything can happen.
“Maybe I answered it that way because I’m more familiar. I’ve seen them multiple times. But there are just so many weird things happening right now,” Finebaum said. “It were two years ago we had already, ‘OK Georgia, Alabama — Alabama, Georgia. Last year, it was all Georgia. Could anybody get near them? And right now, I have never seen seven weeks into the season, in the CFP era, this chaotic.”
Chaos is relative. Georgia began the season at the top of the AP Top 25 and have not been dethroned yet. The Bulldogs will have a chance to rest from the weight of the crown this week. The team will have a bye week before kicking off the back half of the season against Florida on Oct. 28.
