Paul Finebaum weighs in on Georgia, offensive struggles

Georgia is regressing back towards the rest of the pack after looking like a repeat-bound superpower in the opening weeks of the 2022 college football season. Less-than-stellar performances vs. Kent State and Missouri over the last couple weeks have pundits believing that perhaps Georgia can be beaten this year.

One person who is starting to sour on the Bulldogs is SEC Network analyst Paul Finebaum. He recently appeared on Keyshawn, JWill and Max to discuss Georgia’s rather sloppy performances as of late and evaluate whether they were a little too hyped up after the start of their season.

“This is two weeks in a row they have played very poorly,” Finebaum summarized of the last couple weeks for the Bulldogs. Where, obviously, they got off to a terrible start vs. Missouri and were ultimately able to come back in the final quarter. But also referencing the Kent State game. Where they won by 17, but allowed the Golden Eagles to break free on a long screen to take a 12-10 lead in the first half. Sure, Georgia took care of business in the second half. But they still let a mid-level MAC team put up 22 points. Not what you expect from Kirby Smart’s defense.

Finebaum continued, explaining what he’s seen from them that makes him think they aren’t quite at the level they were last season. Or even the level they were at to start this season. He also focused some of that blame on quarterback Stetson Bennett, who Paul Finebaum believes is regressing back to the level of play where he belongs.

“They are making uncharacteristic mistakes. Their best player got banged up. Stetson Bennett is not playing great. I think he got a little inflated with all the Heisman talk. Now, he has gone back to being Stetson Bennett. I’m not overly concerned about them yet.

“They have Auburn this week. But as a whole other show, in terms of a school, they cannot shoot straight. And then they have Vanderbilt next week. I think they have a bye before Florida. They have time. But I thought they were by far the best team in the country three weeks ago. We all got carried away with our praise of Kirby Smart. But I think they can come back.”

After a year of sheer domination, the pendulum is swinging back the other way for Georgia. Maybe those two performances are outliers in another dominant season. Or, perhaps those outings are a sign of further struggles to come.
