Pete Thamel: Georgia optimistic regarding 'game-time decision' Darnell Washington
The optimism is growing for tight end Darnell Washington to suit up for Georgia in the national title game against TCU on Monday.
With rumors running rampant, Pete Thamel of ESPN provided a positive report on Washington’s status for the biggest game of the season.
“There’s an increasing sense of optimism from the Georgia staff that Darnell Washington’s going to be able to have an impact on tonight’s game,” stated Thamel. “He has an injured right ankle that he suffered against Ohio State. He was in a walking boot in the second half of that game. He’s since ditched that walking boot and will be a game-time decision tonight. I’ve been told the Georgia staff plans on him to play, and will be intentional about how they use him tonight.
“Georgia plays 60% of its snaps in 12-personnel. I don’t think they’ll be able to do that with Washington tonight, but that is Georgia’s definitive edge in the run game. Expect Washington to have an impact against an undersized TCU defense.”
Moreover, the optimism from Thamel also comes after Kirby Smart provided an update on the Georgia tight end on Sunday.
Speaking with the media, Smart stated he’s “hopeful” the Bulldogs will have Washington out on the field, and reaffirmed how much the tight end wants to be on the field.
“We’re hopeful we can get Darnell ready to play,” stated Smart. “He’s continued to work really hard, done a lot of rehab. I know he really wants to.

“This is his first chance to play on the west coast. He’s from Vegas. This game means a lot to him. I know it’s an important one.”
As Thamel mentioned, Washington was seen in a boot and on crutches during last week’s victory over Ohio State, and his return would be huge for the Bulldogs. He ranks fourth on the Georgia roster with 426 receiving yards this season and has two touchdowns to his name, as well.
Alas, Darnell Washignton is a game-changer. If he’s not on the field, the Horned Frogs will have one less thing to worry about, and it won’t be good news for the Bulldogs.
Time will tell if the star tight end is able to go, but it looks like Darnell Washington is likely to suit up for Monday’s showdown.
