Georgia Bulldogs tight end Brock Bowers (19) runs after a catch during the third quarter as Auburn Tigers take on Georgia Bulldogs at Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn, Ala., on Saturday, Sept. 30, 2021.

Brock Bowers is set to miss a significant amount of time for Georgia, leaving them without their star player down the stretch. Tightrope ankle surgery was performed on the tight end and his possible return date is truly unknown.

Rece Davis posed the question about Georgia playing without Bowers throughout a “more difficult stretch” of their schedule. ESPN’s Booger McFarland was having none of that, though. McFarland thinks there will just be a simple plug-and-play in place for the Bulldogs while running through the final five games.

“The way the run the football, they’re averaging six yards per carry,” McFarland said. “The way they play defense. Yeah, they might have to adjust the game plan a little bit. But guys, who are we kidding? We know that the Georgia Bulldogs are going to be way more talented than every team on this schedule and that’s going to allow them to plug and play other guys.

“Right now, it’s plug and play and move on against this schedule where Rece called it the ‘meat of their schedule.’ This is more like a filet coming up. A nice, tender filet.”

Georgia will not play on Saturday, enjoying a bye week. Then come games against Florida, Missouri, Ole Miss, and Tennessee in the SEC. Georgia Tech will be the season finale in Clean Old Fashioned Hate in Atlanta.

McFarland does not believe any of those five come close to the talent level of Georgia, with or without Bowers in the lineup. Even if those games are being played with the SEC East hanging in the balance, with the Tennessee game being the only true road conference game.

In McFarland’s mind, playing a team of the same caliber will not come into effect until a potential SEC Championship game against Nick Saban and Alabama.

“They’re going to be more talented than every team they face until the SEC Championship game if and when they meet Alabama there,” McFarland said on Tuesday. “So, yeah they’re going to miss him. But guess what? They’re going to plug and play and put another guy in there.”

So, yes McFarland is confident Georiga is still capable of making the College Football Playoff. Losing a huge player can sometimes put a dent in the chances but not with the roster Smart has built up over the years in Athens. After all, the Bulldogs are still the back-to-back national champions.
