Carson Beck came into this season as one of the top quarterbacks in all of college football. Now, two-thirds of the way through his senior season, Beck has looked far from that at times, especially over the last month or so.

The College GameDay Podcast assessed Beck’s recent poor play during their latest episode on Monday. Rece Davis pointed it out by noting the amount of Beck turnovers over that span, especially in their three biggest games of the last five weeks.

“Look, Carson Beck is a really good player and I understand that there are some mental pressures with returning to your hometown to play – but he had done it before there in Jacksonville. But now this is the third big game out of four big games, whether you categorize them because of rankings or because of rivalry – Alabama, Texas, Florida. Carson Beck has thrown three interceptions in each of those games,” said Davis. “On the season, he’s thrown 11 picks. That’s the second-most in the country.

“For a guy who was being talked about as QB1 in the upcoming NFL Draft?” Davis continued. “And the frustration that you saw on the sideline from Carson Beck? There appears to be some regression or self-imposed pressure or something that’s not quite right for Beck and the Georgia offense.”

Beck is 190-of-290 (65.5%) this season for 2,302 yards. However, his touchdown-to-interception ratio is much worse this season after throwing for 24 scores and six picks at 4:1 last year but now throwing for 17 scores and 11 picks at 1.5:1 this year. That’s without the obvious of him already being one interception shy of doubling his total from all of last season in six less games. That’s what happens with one outing with a pair and three outings with three picks apiece.

To Ryan McGee, Beck has seemingly been forcing the issue based on those numbers. It’s that much odder, though, because he still has his highs but now has these lows.

“I’ve felt that way about him all season is that he’s just pressing,” said McGee. “They’ve got to get Carson Beck back on track because he was distracted then and it’s only gotten worse statistically. You saw it and we sensed it during the game. It just was that he’s pressing.

“That’s what’s frustrating about him. In the second half, particularly in the fourth quarter? He looked like the guy that we were talking about in the preseason. But, in the first half? I mean, he looked awful.”

McGee actually thinks it’s to the point where Georgia has been winning without the help of Beck. That’s been a lining for him as the Bulldogs have still managed to win three of his four multi-interception outings and had their chance to win the other.

“Now, the good news is he’s winning games…They’re winning despite Carson Beck,” said McGee. “I’m saying that he is really, really good but lucky for him that the team is elite because they’re keeping him in games. Lesser teams? They’re not going to win a game with three interceptions.”

Beck is still the quarterback for the No. 2 team in the country in the ‘Dawgs. It’s just that he’s going to have to be much better and take less on, which he can, if they are to accomplish what they’re wanting to.

“He is baffling to me. But he’s pressing,” McGee said. “I mean, he just looks like a guy who’s trying to win it on every play and he doesn’t need to do that. I think maybe his team reminded him of that on Saturday.”
